Celebrity Stylist Jessica Paster Talks Trends, Tips and Dressing Stars for the Red Carpet

Jessica PasterAs a celebrity stylist and chief stylist at JustFab, this is Jessica Paster's busiest time of year. There are countless award shows to prep for, numerous celebs to outfit in the latest designer gowns and she still has to help customers pick out fashion-forward footwear online. Jessica’s impressive client list includes Cate Blanchett, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Aniston and Felicity Jones, just to name a few. She’s made stars look stellar on the red carpet and in high-fashion editorials. The superstar stylist is currently putting together looks for Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards for Emily Blunt and husband John Krasinski, Elle Macpherson, Mir anda Kerr, Carla Gugino and New Girl’s Hannah Simone. With that in mind, we thought now would be the perfect time to discuss all things red carpet.

The Fashion Spot: Describe the process of searching for the perfect gown. How much input do your clients have?

Jessica Paster: I am more of a collaborative stylist, I love when my clients have input and I do try to provide them with what they think they want, but I don’t like being short-sighted. Sometimes the client is too focused on a certain style/color or designer, but by providing A LOT (and I can’t emphasize enough on options, options, options), it can open up your client’s eyes to something different that they may have never considered.

tFS: How do you know you've found "the one?"

JP: It is all about how my client feels and moves, and usually you can read their expressions and body language when they are super excited about “the one.” You just know, you have this gut feeling that it’s the one!

tFS: What time do stars really start getting ready for the red carpet?

JP: I believe the star is up at the crack of dawn already preparing for their glam team to arrive. Hair and makeup usually starts at 11 a.m. About 10 to 15 minutes before my client has to leave for the show is when I dress and accessorize them and send them on their way. Yes, we like to live on the edge!

tFS: What trends can we expect to see on Sunday? How about for the SAG Awards, Grammys and Oscars?

JP: I think the trend for this season is chic and beautiful ball gowns, and with girls like Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence and the talented Emily Blunt, you can expect to see high-fashion couture.

tFS: We know you favor a clean and minimalist silhouette, but are there certain trends you're embracing?

JP: You know me well! Right now I am fully embracing simple necklines, beautiful vibrant colors and minimal silhouettes with embellishments.

tFS: Do you have your go-to designers?

JP: I don’t have a go-to designer per se, but I do love Oscar de la Renta, Prada, Alexander McQueen...I could really keep going.

tFS: Were you ever surprised by the reaction a celeb received after wearing something you selected?

JP: Absolutely! I still get butterflies when my peers reach out to me via text, email or social media to tell me how amazing my client looks!

tFS: Have any of your clients ever experienced a wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet?

JP: Every single one of them! It’s Murphy’s Law, you can ask any other stylist and they will tell you the same.

tFS: Can you give us some hints on what your clients might be wearing this Sunday?

JP: Unfortunately, I won’t be able to give you any hints as we haven’t locked down the final looks yet.

tFS: Are you styling any celebs for other award shows? The Oscars, perhaps?

JP: This is to-be-announced, but yes, I will be dressing a few clients for the Oscars.

tFS: Other than your own clients, who are you excited to see on the red carpet at the Golden Globes?

JP: I am enamored with Jennifer Lawrence and Raf Simons for Christian Dior at the moment.

tFS: Can you share some of your style secrets/tips when it comes to dressing for the red carpet?

JP: The most important thing is confidence; all eyes are on you! And second is comfort. If you aren’t comfortable, then make sure you can fake it really well. Nobody looks great when they look uncomfortable.
