Supermodels storm the Olympics Closing Ceremony

There is a certain - hearth way to make certain Group GB trumps London's record medal haul at Rio 2016: we should convince the IOC to enshrine manner catwalking as an official Olympic activity.

Why? Very well, as the fleeting, amazing, but endearingly barmy catwalk interlude at very last night's closing ceremony showed, British vogue is odds-on pure gold. Boasting strength in depth from seasoned superstars (Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell) to prodigal up-and-comers (Georgia May Jagger and Jourdan Dunn), our nine - sturdy supermodel squad confirmed themselves a match for any country. Furthermore, their gleaming gold dresses demonstrated how our designers could give any individual, even the French, a Fashion Olympics drubbing far too.

The display began as 8 black ( in a natural way, darling) trucks trundled into the Olympic Stadium, every single flanked by a gold helmeted, biker-jacketed phalanx of volunteers. To the strains of David Bowie's Manner (Vangelis is so two weeks in the past ) these stylish tractors pulled black and white billboards. And then - KA-POW! - the billboards fell away to reveal the gold-clad versions. Aside from David Gandy (the only douleur product represented, in a lurex-sheened Paul Smith suit ), all wore sky- high platformed high -heels. Even worse, just about every confronted a higher - trouble synchronised program that ran from their in-tractor podiums, alongside the crimson -white-and-blue, athlete-bordered spokes of the Union flag catwalk and then, soon after a temporary breather, on and up onto the phase. It was a problem they overcame with élan.

Lily Cole (in a leaf-festooned brocade and lace knee-lengther by Erdem), Karen Elson (in a spaghetti-strap break up -to-the-thigh stunner by Burberry), Lily Donaldson (in a sequinned, scoop-necked, corseted strumpet robe by Vivienne Westwood) and Georgia May Jagger (in a really stylish, flare-skirted gazar gown by Victoria Beckham) all set in faultless walks - 8.5s or thereabouts. Partnering David Gandy, Torvill and Dean style, was Jourdan Dunn, who won an more half place for retaining her 21-feather Stephen Jones headdress simply on, in mixture with a refreshingly not- entirely -gold jersey column gown by Jonathan Saunders. Snake-hipped Stella Tennant, a trouser- fit expert, experienced certainly no problem at all with her gold, silver and bronze chain-mail two piece by Christopher Kane ( another eight. 5 ).

All eyes, even so, have been on Crew GB's marquee names - our greats. Moss and Campbell might be in catwalk semi-retirement but both set in basic catwalk shows. Moss poured down the catwalk like vodka onto ice: the only factor lacking from that liquid perambulation (in a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen bias- lower silk-lined present -stopper) was a signature cigarette perched in her pout. From the opposite spoke came Campbell, battling valiantly to rein in her urge to outpace the relaxation, in a metalwork-bodied, tulle- trained warrior-queen's wedding ceremony dress, also by Burton for McQueen.

Experienced you blinked, or gone to make a cup of tea, you would have missed it, but catwalk fashion's micro- moment in the Olympic spotlight was eighteen -carat pleasurable, and the stadium crowd whooped thunderously.

It was a second styled by Lucinda Chambers, Vogue magazine's fashion director. Talking from backstage she explained : "How did it appearance ? I was terrified something was planning to go erroneous, I are unable to convey to you." She added : " It truly is unbelievable that Britain, this sort of a tiny place, has these a wide variety of talent in style, and that is what we wanted to show. We're recognized for bonkers style, but what I hope came across is that these designers make beautiful clothes… that people would want to dress in." So go on Jacques Rogge: style catwalking brings together things of velocity - going for walks, synchronised swimming and rhythm gymnastics, and its elite athletes are larger - servicing than the stroppiest footballers. And very best of all, Britain does it better than anybody else, even the Brazilians.
