Bringing Catwalk Colour To Your Makeup Bag: Which New Beauty Hue Are You?

This winter, it's time to make room for the hot new catwalk colours coming to a beauty counter near you…

1. Purple Accent

Try It If: You need a smoky eye update

If it’s bright it will tone it down, if it’s dark it will make it pop and if it’s neutral it will give it an edge. That’s purple power for you. Add a touch of this season's favourite colour fix into your usual colour palette and reap the rewards. ‘It‘s the one colour (apart from the obvious neutrals) that compliments all eye colours,’ says make-up artist Mel Arter. ‘It really is a tonic for the complexion, especially if you opt for intense purple with a su btle shimmer or metallic quality to it.’ We love the vibrant violet shades in this Estee Lauder Pure Colour Five Color EyeShadow palette which creator Tom Pecheuax describes as ‘Paris by night.’ Also look out for lipsticks shot with a subtle shimmer like L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Lipstick in Electric Fuchsia.

2. Mink Moment

Try It If: You match your make-up to your nails

True colour coinessuers will notice a subtle but all too important shift in the tone of the new season neutrals. Summers buff, honey and spice nudes have sharped up and gained a more uniform edge – utilitarian mink and mushroom are your new need to know nudes. ‘Swept over bare eye lids the effect of these subdued shades is transformational,’ says make-up artist Wendy Rowe. ‘They have a knack of cancelling our any redness or darkness and defining any eye shape.’  Ditto for nails, if your hands have ever struggled to pull off a neutral hue it’s worth re-visiting the lates t launches. Chanel Nail Colour in Frenzy is particularly flattering on dark skin, Dior Vernis in June on golden skin and Topshop Big Smoke on pale skin.

3. Garnet Rush

Try It If: Lashes and lips are your thing

The Grazia fashion team inform us that ‘garnet’ is the champion of their new colour palette. Trouser suits, oversized knits or killer accessories – whatever your poison, it’s a colour you can wear head to toe and guess what? It’s fool proof.  Now, us beauty girls have been banging on about the benefits of this rich burgundy shade for some time so we’re happy to tell you that it’s just as on trend for cheeks, eyes and lips as it is for shoes and bags. According to make-up guru Laura Mercier your lashes are where you will see the biggest benefit; ‘A coat of this colour gives an incredible contrast and brings out the true vibrancy of your eye colour.’ Her new Long Lash Mascara in Burgundy, £18.50 gives eye popping effects and works a treat on blue and brown eyes. ‘Paint it as close to the lash line as you can,’ says Laura.
