There are some fashion editors and fashion assistants who swear they're "over" over-the-knee boots. To them, they're passe and declasse, but we beg to differ. Actually, there's no begging. We flat out differ. This little closet gem is extremely useful for more than one reason, and that's why it's here to stay. In big cities, all the women using the foot express on their commute are grateful for the extra layer of real or faux leather snugly keeping their legs warm under dresses, skirts, and coats. They add a touch of sex appeal and edge to an otherwise conservative or sweet look, which means if you didn't wear them to the office, you might want to pack them in your tote bag for cocktail hour. They're sleek and can be paired with a wide variety of pieces from skinny pants to rompers.
So what's the problem? Why are there naysayers in the high fashion world? A few women have ruined it for many by wearing thigh-highs and over-the-knees with too short minis, a la Pretty Woman. They've also (fashion) victimized themselves with too-high heels and the kind of faux leather that has a telltale plastic sheen to it. Platform heels are okay, just not paired with an over-the-top outfit or too-shiny shaft. Don't be that girl. Instead, take the classy route with these boots and let them be a staple of your 2013 winter wardrobe. Here are some pre-approved celebrity looks from the recent past and present to inspire your over-the-knee style.
A high heel in a chunky, square version keeps these equally appropriate for day and night. Kate could easily swap out the leggings for a mini and tights and still look so right.

How do you make a silk shorts set look low-key and casual? Flat suede over-the-knee boots, of course.

Sleek, tight boots with an oversize sweater coat? Don't you just love simple, yet totally chic? This is one for your inspiration board.

Here's Kyle sporting a perfect traveling pair of boots. The equestrian touches and low heel make them perfect for just about any casual to casual-dressy look.

Kim can be a divisive figure when it comes to her fashion choices. But she's got it right here. She's mixing textures and proportions to great effect. It's sexy, but doesn't show an inch of unnecessary skin. Good job, Kim!

We love the edgy vibe this faux lace-up pair has. And we love even more that Kylie kept it chic with a flared coat and all-black ensemble.

These black suede flats are an everyday go-to for fall and winter months. You'll be surprised at how they keep your calves warm in cold weather. Put them with black bottoms for a lengthening effect that precludes the need for a heel.

Normally, we'd tell anyone to shy away from platforms like these. They're a bit over-the-top for an over-the-knee boot. But Zoe can do no wrong, as she keeps them toned down with a matte suede shaft. Keep that in mind if you're going to go for a high heel.

Christy knows how to pair contrasts to perfection. The shorter heel and demure dress offset the comparatively shiny texture of her boots for a sexy-sweet mix.

She's got legs. If you're long in the gams, a light colored boot will help even out your height, as will a light colored top. Here Claudia shows that you don't have to go monochrome to look casually chic.

We're not entirely sure about the outfit she has on underneath, but Pink's boots are on point. The heel is perfect, the subtle touch of gold hardware is just enough. If you can snag a pair like this, go for it!
